talibusorabat: A black woman in hijab looks unimmpressed (LMP: Fatima Puhleeeze)
It is too early in the morning for me to attempt cleverness.

Kaleidoscope, run by the awesome people of [community profile] dark_agenda, is a multimedia fanwork exchange for rare fandoms that feature characters of color or creators of color. I got some awesome goodies last year (including the icon I'm using -- oh Fatima! Be still, my heart!)

So come join us!

20th-Nov-2011 10:05 am - Art gone live!
talibusorabat: A pile of books labeled "my escape" (Books: My escape)
Kaleidoscope, a challenge run by the lovely people of [community profile] dark_agenda to bring more characters of color into fandom, has finally gone live, and I got spoiled rotten with two gifts - one from the person officially assigned to me, and one that someone else just picked up as a treat.

My official gift is this gorgeous piece of photo manipulation of Balsa and Chagum from the series Seirei no Moribito. If you haven't seen this yet, you should. It's one of those rare epics where the conflict isn't driven by good versus evil, but by knowledge versus ignorance. Gorgeous, gorgeous series.

And as an extra treat, someone made me 5 LJ icons of Fatima from Little Mosque on the Prairie, which is one of the first sitcoms I've ever really loved (though I haven't finished it, because it's Canadian and I don't have easy access to it). It is a hilarious, heartfelt look at the Islamic community in a small town, and Fatima is one of the best characters. She is intelligent, self-confident, hilarious, and extremely traditional, proving that being conservative doesn't mean you're a jerk (and conversely, that being conservative is no excuse for being an ignorant jerk). If you're able to get your hands on this series somehow, do it! It will make you laugh and hug things because the world is so big and people are so silly.

While you're at it, check out all the other awesome work that was done. I know that's how I'm going to be spending my day.
