Legend of Korra is definitely better watched with a friend. My roommate had missed the past two weeks, so we watched the last three episodes together and spent the entire time laughing about Verrick as Stephen Colbert. It was great.

But this week's episode...

WOW. That was intense. I'm not entirely sure how I feel right now except CLIFFHANGER.

Let's start with the break-up I've been waiting for. On one hand, I'm excited that it actually happened. On the other hand, it's one more thing that makes it seem like Mako is the hero of the story, because he's the one who ends the relationship. Just like he's the one to realize that the northern water tribe is not behind the bombing, and that going being the President's back regarding sending troops down is a terrible idea. Everything in the series seems designed to make him seem like the only truly rational person. It's almost like they're going for a San-Ashitaka relationship, but it's not working. I don't like how he's so obviously right and Korra's so obviously wrong.

But at the same time, I do like what Korra's doing. I don't approve of it, of course, and I want to shake her, but in terms of characterization, it makes sense for her as a person and as an 18 year old. Her reactions and behavior are very believable for me and I like that.

I just wish she was more pro-active and not just reactive.

And the other storylines! I enjoyed the Tenzin-Meelo storyline, but unlike other episodes, I don't understand what the purpose of it was or how it tied into the larger episode. I feel like that screentime could have been better spent on the main story.

It was great getting Bolin time without Eska, although the way he screamed upon seeing just her picture really broke my heart. Eska and Bolin could have been (could maybe still be) an interesting and unusual story about domestic abuse and how it's not a joke just because the woman is the abuser. If the arc of the story led to Korra and Mako and Asami recognizing how wrong things are and that Bolin legitimately needs help, it'd be great. But I don't trust Bryke to do that.

It was fabulous seeing Lin again. I didn't realize how empty my life was without her until she was back.

LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN

I need more Lin always.

I actually think Korra is being really pro-active at the moment. She is pursuing every possible avenue she can think of to save her tribe, even if they are not the best of avenues. She's desperate and she's running around and she's making terrible choices, but if there's one thing you can say about Korra, it's that she's trying tog get stuff done.

I think maybe the Tenzin-Meelo thing is kind of a followup to the previous mentions that Tenzin needs to spend more time with his kids, to be better than his father in that way. He had his bonding moment with Ikki last episode, maybe we'll go back to Jinora next. I do agree that the feel of things is really disjointed. Every episode I am waiting for them to bring the two storylines back together so it doesn't feel like watching two shows.

If they're going to play Eska the way they're playing her, I really wish they'd just write her out because it gets more gross every week, and I didn't even think that was possible after last week.

Pro-active was maybe the wrong way to put it. It's more like she's constantly going along with other people's suggestions -- her dad was the one telling her to go to the UN President; Verrick was the one to suggest going straight to the Army. It's like she's a point-and-shoot action gun rather than a person making choices. I don't really need her to come up with her own ideas -- bless her soul, she's not a planner -- but I guess I'd like it better if it was like Verrick had one suggestion, Asami had another suggestion, Korra took a few seconds to think about it and then selected Verrick's idea.

I just want Eska to be a learning experience for everybody, sob. Her entire storyline could be awesome if it was a message about domestic abuse and how it isn't just husbands beating their wives. I KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE.

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. She does seem to be basically going along with other people's ideas without considering them very much. It's frustrating for sure.

talibusorabat: ...What was the plot again? (NaNo: Plot?)
It's not even just that she's not thinking about them much; she's not even really being given options. It'd be interesting (and in-character) to have her given multiple options and she just impulsively picks one without considering the consequences. As it is, she's handed one idea and runs with it. It makes the entire story very flat.
