Honestly, my main thought about this episode?
SKY BISON BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They justified the existence of this episode. I mean, I liked the rest of the episode, but. Come on.
Sky bison babies.Bolin and Eska continue to make me deeply, deeply uncomfortable. Maybe the writers are playing the long game and the end will justify this prolonged torture... but I doubt it. The doubting makes me sad.
The Tonraq/Unalaq plotline took the turn that everybody saw coming, unfortunately.
Where is this series' Zuko? It boggles my mind that these are the same people who made Zuko such a complex antagonist with a gorgeous character arc, and who made Azula and Ty Lee and Mai. Amon
could have been a complex villain, but everything that made him complicated was swept to the side, and Unalaq is cunning but one dimensional in his motivations.
It's just strange.
Legend of Korra is intended for a slightly older audience than
Avatar: The Last Airbender, but it's so much more black & white. On a narrative level, it lacks compassion and moral complexity.
I both enjoyed seeing Korra and Naga go against the judge, because I love it when my ladies are fierce, and felt really uncomfortable with the continued demonstration that force is the appropriate way to solve every problem. The judge didn't even put up an actual fight. I hope that Korra will have to find some other ways of solving her problems when going to the United Republic.
I thought the whole airbender family plotline was wrapped up nicely. (SKY BISON BABIES!!!!) Considering how tightly bound together all the characters were in book 1, it feels weird to have such a divided plot for such an extended period of time. I'm curious how it will all tie together.
Also, more Jinora, please.
